Walter Mazzarri (Italian pronunciation: ; born 1 October 1961) is an Italian professional football manager and former player. After a 14-year playing career with Italian clubs including Reggiana and Empoli, Mazzarri coached several smaller Italian sides and in 2007 took up a managerial position with Sampdoria. With the help of the attacking partnership of Antonio Cassano and Giampaolo Pazzini, he led the team to qualify for the UEFA Cup in his first season and subsequently reached the Coppa Italia final the next year. In 2009, he joined Napoli, where he implemented a 3–4–3 formation with which he later became associated. With the attacking trio of Ezequiel Lavezzi, Edinson Cavani and Marek Hamšík, nicknamed I tre tenori ("The three tenors"), he helped the team qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in the club's history in 2011, and won the Coppa Italia the following season, the club's first trophy in over 20 years. In his final season with the team, he managed a second-place finish in Serie A, the club's best league finish in over 20 years. In 2013, he moved to Inter but was sacked halfway through his second season with the club. He later managed Torino in Serie A, and had one year in charge of Watford in England's Premier League in 2016–17. In 2023, after a gap year from his last management for Cagliari, he returned to Napoli but was sacked in February 2024 after three months. FC Internazionale
FC Internazionale club statement
Walter Mazzarri is the new coach of Inter. The club thanks Andrea Stramaccioni for his efforts

MILAN - FC Internazionale would like to announce that the club has appointed Walter Mazzarri as the new head coach. FC Internazionale would like to thank Andrea Stramaccioni for the great commitment and professionalism he showed in a particularly difficult year. Walter Mazzarri has signed a two-year deal.

FC Internazionale
Moratti: Mazzarri, decision based on experience
This in no way diminishes our high regard for the talent and potential of Stramaccioni, I m sure he ll become one of the best Italian coaches

MILAN - Massimo Moratti once again spoke to the press outside the Saras offices.

Q: Is Andrea Stramaccioni s time at the club officially over?

I believe if you visit the Inter club site you ll see it s official.

Q: Has this been one of the hardest sackings of your tenure?

They re never nice. But let s say it for what it is: for now this change is due to the fact that we ll have a tough year and I thought we needed a coach with the experience of Mazzarri. That doesn t diminish the fact that we rate Stramaccioni as a talented coach, with potential, and I m sure he ll become one of the best coaches in Italy.

Q: Have you spoken to Stramaccioni?

Yes, I ve spoken to him all week. Don t think that s not been the case.

Q: Has he realised that the decision was based on the fact the team suffered too many defeats?

The reasons might even safeguard his professionalism because perhaps he was particularly unlucky and, at this moment in time, he might need to find himself in an easier situation than the one at Inter. But with the year he s had he will find that. It won t be an easy situation because we ll need to show we re very good and also of course have a bit more luck.

Q: Walter Mazzarri is a gutsy coach with a lot of experience.

Yes, the decision was made with a big focus on that.

Q: What do you expect from Inter? Will it be a comeback year?

We expect to do well every year. Now let s see what happens in the transfer market. We ll speak to the coach about that and we ll see what comes out of that and then our hopes based on how good the team is.

Q: So the fans need not worry? You ll build an Inter side to win trophies?

We didn t start badly this season, it was an Inter side capable of winning but then we had a series of catastrophes, in terms of injuries, that meant we didn t do as well. We ll certainly try to rebuild to have solid targets.

Q: And what of reports, over the last few days, claiming you wanted to sell Inter?

No, come off it.

Mazzarri: My course with Napoli is over

The manager: These were four amazing seasons, I thank the President and all the fans

My course in Naples has come to an end. Walter Mazzarri says goodbye at the end of the Serie A championship. He will no longer be Napoli s manager and while explaining his choice he thanks both the Club and all the fans.

The moment has come to take a little break and think. Napoli is an amazing reality, I am leaving because after four years I need new motivation, also the for players. I said goodbye to them and to the President in the locker room. I was really movedm having to hugging everybody.

I thank our fans and all those who have supported me throughout these wonderful years. I made this decision some time ago. However, I respected everybody because I wanted the team to give its best until the end, as it happened. I took Napoli as on top as I could, I put all my efforts into this tea and I think that I carried out my task in a correct way.

I thank De Laurentiis and Bigon, who tried to persuade me to change my mind, but I think that the moment has come either to take some months off or to engage somewhere else. It will depend on the offers. Naples has got an important treasure and a solid and healthy Club, so I am sure there is a great future ahead here.
