I commentated on this match from the TV gantry and Rovers in fact reverted to a more solid yet staggered 4-4-2 after the two heavy defeats at Peterborough and Oxford. Wayne Brown moved to the right hand side from his previous role behind the strikers but still made runs across the pitch into the hole. Hoskins and Kuffour clearly played as a front two, although Jeff Hughes joined the front line as much as he could. In response to RussG, Rovers under Trollope have lacked width for much of his tenure and other than the disgraced David Pipe and the ineffective Mark Wright, he has fielded central midfielders (such as Lines, Blizzard and Brown) on the right side of midfield for the most part.

I was a spectator at this match and can confirm that Rovers played a 4-3-3 formation with Hughes as part of the forward line and with a flat 3-man midfield. Rovers lacked width for much of the match with DR and DL positions staying back instead of pushing forward and providing attacking width. The 4-3-3 formation matches manager, Paul Trollope s comments about the new formation this season in The Pirate programme.
