Chile played a very attacking 3-4-1-2 formation with few naturally defensive minded players, Fernandez played the playmaker role and Sanchez often dropped deep to receive the ball but mostly played with Suazo in a front 2.

Mexico played a 3-5-2 formation with a very inexperienced U-23 team which struggled to maintain it s shape at times.
