England captain Harry Kane opted to move to German giants Bayern Munich last summer,
becoming the most expensive player in Bundesliga history. He has got off to a fantastic start
at his new club, scoring 19 goals in his opening 15 matches in all competitions.
Such has been Kane’s explosive start, that the press in Germany are talking about the
prospects of the Englishman breaking Robert Lewandowski’s record for the most goals in a
season in the country. The former Bayern striker achieved that feat in the 2020/21 campaign,
scoring 41 Bundesliga goals.
One man who will be following Kane’s performances closely is England manager Gareth
Southgate. He will be delighted with what he is seeing from his captain in the German league.
Kane Can Give England a Big Boost
If the 30-year-old continues in the same run of form as he is showing, he will go into Euro
2024 next summer full of confidence. England are 4/1 favourites in the Euro 2024 winner
betting for the major tournament, and ahead of the likes of France, Spain and Germany in that
list.
It is not just Bayern that Kane has been scoring goals for in 2023 - he has found the back of
the net eight times in seven games for England. He will have the chance to better that record
when the Three Lions face Malta and North Macedonia in the Euro 2024 qualifiers before the
year is out.
Kane became England’s all-time leading scorer back in March, beating Wayne Rooney’s
previous record. He is the leading goalscorer in
the 2023/24 Bundesliga standings, and no
player in all four major leagues in Europe has scored more than him. The former Spurs man
is putting himself in contention for some prestigious awards in Europe this season.
England Fell One Hurdle Short at Euro 2020
Southgate’s side go into the European Championship next summer bidding to go one place
better than they did at the Euro 2020 tournament - they were beaten on penalties by Italy at
Wembley in what was their first appearance in a final of a major competition since 1966.
Under Southgate, England have consistently reached the latter stages of big tournaments. At
the
World Cup in 2018, they advanced through to the last four in Russia, going out in extra-
time against Croatia. In last year’s World Cup, they made it to the quarter-finals, losing to
eventual runners-up France.
Southgate will be hoping his players lean on that experience in Germany in 2024. They
qualified for the tournament with ease, remaining unbeaten with two games to go. The Three
Lions have won seven of their eight games in 2023, with two victories coming against Italy to
avenge their loss to the Azzurri in the Euro 2020 final.
Before the European Championship next summer, Kane will be focussing on helping his club
pick up silverware domestically and in Europe. The England striker has yet to win a trophy in
his career, but that looks likely to change this season, as Bayern are on course for league and
cup success.
